It is fairly expensive to live in Munich. Recent calculations indicate that living in the Capital of Bavaria costs at least € 600 per month. However, Munich is worth it!

HousingAs in other German university towns it is very difficult to find a room in Munich. The rents in Munich are the highest ones in Germany and there are 110,000 students. All students - both foreigners and Germans - must be prepared to live in a youth hostel or a pension for a transitory period until they succeed in finding decent accommodation. From experience there is a shortage of apartments at the beginning of the semester in October and November, therefore the search for a room should begin 3-4 months in advance. Sublet rooms had an average rent in 2001 at about € 300. Rooms in a residence halls have a rent around € 250. For this reason, slots in residence halls are particularly desirable. There are about 9.000 rooms in residence halls. This discrepancy has lead to waiting periods that can last, depending on the type of room and the location, between one and four semesters. A necessary prerequisite for the search for a room is endurance. If you cannot realize your ideal conception at once, you should take a reasonably acceptable room and look around later for a better alternative. The Office of International Affairs and Student Services ("Studentenwerk") offers an All-Inclusive Package for international students. It includes accommodation in a furnished room in a student dorm, use of the student library and other facilities of the Student Services Organisation ("Studentenwerk"), supervision through the tutor program and invitations to various cultural events for a package price of about € 250 per month.
